Observation date: July 22, 2025

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Two of this species seen at the same time. Perching on foliage and patrolling area immediately adjacent to the waterfall. Sometimes chasing and flying together in upward spiral. I have not noticed the red spot band in the submarginal area below the white spot band of the dorsal side of the hindwing on other butterflies of this species before today. Marys Peak Scenic Botanical Special Interest Area 15 miles southwest of Corvallis, Oregon in the Siuslaw National Forest. Specific site for this sighting is a small roadside waterfall 2.4 miles from the junction of Marys Peak Forest Road and Highway 34. Habitat on the mountain includes riparian, dry rocky and forest edge road cut, grassland and a rocky south-facing slope called the Rock Garden near the summit. The waterfalls and seeps along the road and the walk to the summit are particularly productive when looking for butterflies and moths. The summit of Marys Peak is 4097 feet. Pit toilets available. No potable water.
