The Bride
Catocala neogama
Observation date: June 18, 2025
Submitted by: Blue Swallowtail
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Caterpillar found under various trees, fed on walnut leaves. Was roughly one inch long when found, molted twice and reached 2.75 inches before pupating. Spun a thin cocoon between walnut leaves after three weeks, then took five days to fully pupate. Moth emerged August 11th, four weeks after pupating. This caterpillar was reared with a slightly older bride caterpillar which I found a few days later. While both reached a similar size in their last instar, this individual was more mottled with a noticeably larger head and longer legs, so I'm not sure if it's also a bride or a different species.

Coordinator notes: Once again, great record keeping! When I first saw this I thought it might be C. piatrix, but upon further examination I think its just a more colorful C. neogama. The underwings are difficult to identify!
