Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
Papilio glaucus

Observation date: August 10, 2025
Date notes: 79 degrees, breezy partly cloudy
Submitted by: Allison Barta
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: There it was, resting on a fern. It was really quiet, once in a while closing its' wings. Made me wonder if it had just emerged from a chrysalis. Look at its wings, especially in the ventral photos. Looks like they are not quite set after emerging. Really surprised once again to find something out of the ordinary! Way north of its range. Canadian Swallowtails are already done in our area for this season. Again....... What next ? My 2025 Butterfly season is AWESOME !

Coordinator notes: This time of year, it would have to be an Eastern based on current knowledge. However, this individual appears to have mixed characteristics of both Eastern and Canadian. There hasn’t been much (if any) research into the genetics of the Tigers in the upper Midwest…would love to see someone pursue this! -Jeff Gesell
