Coordinator notes: You're correct, this is an intermediate dark morph female Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. They can get to nearly solid black on the ventral HW along with the dorsal side. In addition to the classic markings on the ventral HW for an Eastern, it is extremely rare to find a Canadian Tiger dark morph and they would be out of flight at this time. The dark female morph seems to be working its way northward year after year (they historically mirrored the Pipevine Swallowtail range). I can recall seeing only one in the Alexandria area growing up, but my brother sees them fairly regularly now in that area. Cheers to the amazing season! -Jeff Gesell
