Observation notes: Observed an adult Imperial Moth post-emergence. Around 10:30 p.m. on 7/31, I found what appeared to be a freshly emerged moth in my apartment vestibule in East Brunswick, NJ. It was shiny, slightly iridescent, and unable to fly. It repeatedly flipped on its back and thudded into walls. The next morning, it was still there, so I gently moved it outdoors using a bowl and cardboard. Two nights later, I found the same moth perched on the wall outside—fully developed, alert, and with expanded wings. I was able to get a clear photo. I understand Imperial Moths are declining in NJ, so I’m submitting this to contribute to conservation awareness and data collection.
