Speyeria cybele

Observation date: July 25, 2025
Submitted by: DDethlef
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Saw several of these butterflies near the East Fork San Juan River a few miles from East Fork Campground. They were feeding on the cutleaf coneflowers next to the water.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Much larger than the Mormon Fritillary...that in your picture looks like a male GSF...subspecies neomexicana (=carpenterii) exclusive to the San Juan Mts. in SW Colorado (also in northern New Mexico to the south). You described its preferred habitat perfectly...forested areas with flowing water nearby and lots of nectar flowers (especially Senecio and Rudbeckia cone flowers). Mike
