Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I observed multiple of these along a maintenance road in Mustang Island State Park, seemingly nectaring on woolly stemodia (Stemodia lantana) and largeleaf pennywort (Hydrocotyle bonariensis). These were darker buckeyes than I had ever seen. This suggested species in iNaturalist is one that is not in my field guides so any information you can provide me would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Coordinator notes: Hi. There are just three Junonia sp. in south Texas. Here's an iNaturalist link that explains things well: https://ecuador.inaturalist.org/posts/44540-three-species-of-junonia-buckeye-butterflies-in-south-texas And here also is a link to another article (temporarily down for maintenance but should be available by Monday 7/28/25): https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/static-page/down_bethesda.html Good luck!
