Anicia Checkerspot
Euphydryas anicia

Observation date: June 27, 2025
Submitted by: Cascade Colors
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This has a lot more orange than any Anicia I have ever seen, so thought it might be Edith's. Was surprised it was in a wholly forested area rather than an open meadow.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Still the Anicia Checkerspot...subspecies eurytion...found in the next elevation level with much Canadian Zone habitat and typically redder versus the less red bernadetta-type subspecies rorina found in the sagebrush zone lower down. At and over timberline, subspecies brucei occurs and it is again darker blacker...and smaller. You might find Edith's on Grand County Rd 50 on the other side of Byer's Canyon...in late May to mid-June in the stubby terraces east of the road going past the cattle guard and into the national forest area...many good butterflies to be found there too.
