Variegated Fritillary
Euptoieta claudia

Observation date: June 23, 2025
Date notes: Today Temps. dropped down to 70"s today. Past Five days it has been in the high 80's - 90's creating a heat index of over 100 degrees with high humidity. I wonder if the extreme heat promoted species like Dainty Sulphur and Variegated Fritillary to arrive earlier than usual.

Observation notes: I found 2 individuals. The first one was tattered. looked like a bird tried to eat it. Bottom wings 1/2 gone. Then about a mile away I found this Frit in good health It was feeding/nectaring like crazy. Usually I only find 1 Variegated Fritillary each summer. Awesome to find 2 this early in the season. Last year I found None all summer.

Coordinator notes: It seems you are seeing a handful of southern migrants early in Minnesota. I wonder if there have been some strong southerly breezes pushing them northward with the heat? -Jeff Gesell
