Gold-hunter's Hairstreak
Satyrium auretorum
Observation date: May 23, 2025
Submitted by: ezeemonee
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: In the hills above Malibu Creek in the Santa Monica Mountains. Several of these on Valley Oak. Partly cloudy day with gusting winds in the 70’s F. Note the chocolate brown topside color on the in-flight pics which is an ID point vs Orangish for Hedgerow Hairstreak. If this is subspecies Fumosum, this is interesting because of the host plant association with Valley Oak as opposed to the main host plant of Coast Live Oak. Typical Gold-Hunters utilize Scrub Oaks as a host. These would occasionally take flight and chase each other when the wind was strong. Then they would go back to perching on leaves when the wind died down.
