Horace's Duskywing
Erynnis horatius

Observation date: May 19, 2025
Submitted by: DeepSkyKelly
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I'm not sure if these photos are clear enough for an ID. I'm ruling out Rocky Mountain because ventral hindwing is missing those two definitive spots. There seems to be some grey lining the black bands on the dorsal forewing which makes me think Meridian, but I don't see the expected prominent white spots below the main line of white spots descending from the leading edge. Mottled seems possible, but I didn't get any view of the upper hindwing and can't be sure. That leaves me with Perseus: hilltopping, missing ventral hindwing spots.

Coordinator notes: I like your thought process - good effort! - but somehow you didn't consider Horace's, one of the routine duskywings in your area. Persius, on the other hand, is unlikely.
