Horace's Duskywing
Erynnis horatius

Observation date: April 30, 2012
Submitted by: cfhayes
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This individual was nectaring on Ligustrum. Given its early bloom time and location along the Atlantic Flyway, this particular bush attracts an interesting diversity and abundance of butterflies. Image taken at 11:29 AM Weather: 72 F, clear, 5mph SSE
Status: Unknown

Coordinator notes: Thanks for contributing! This is a fresh male Horace's Duskywing. On a Funereal Duskywing as fresh as this individual, the hindwing fringe would be extra broad and a brilliant white color, while this individual has a thinner, darker gray hindwing fringe. Male Funereal would also have a significantly darkened blackish basal area on the forewings, a paler tan "forearm patch", and denser silvery scaling in the distal half of the forewings. The very uniform brown coloration and lack of silvery scaling on the forewings are good things to look for on a male Horace's.
