Tailed Copper
Lycaena arota

Observation date: June 19, 2024
Submitted by: ezeemonee
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found this on a hike on the North face of Boney Peak near Sycamore Falls creek in the Santa Monica Mountains on host plant Currants. Possibly could be the rare subspecies Nubila. Looks like a female. Partly cloudy day in the 70’s F. ID cues are the dark forewing markings with thick margins, subdued orange areas on the hindwing medians, and the habitat and location. According to the Office of Endangered Species, "Limited to a few moist coastal canyons in the Santa Monica Mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties". Presumed extinct at type locality (Griffith Park) but there may be one recent sighting there.
