Anicia Checkerspot
Euphydryas anicia

Observation date: June 02, 2024
Submitted by: Cascade Colors
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This is in a drier canyon-like area at a lower elevation by the CO river, with sage/agricultural land extensive to both east and west. I know Chalcedon's probably unlikely as I believe it's farther west in the state, but the appearance of this seemed more Chalcedon-like. However, Edith's is probably more likely given habitat and location. I didn't think it was Anicia due to location and it not being in the mountains per se. Unfortunately it wouldn't show its underside.

Coordinator notes: I think most likely in the Hot Sulphur Springs area it is anicia although editha does at least occur on the Beaver Creek Road (FR50) just west (a really good place for many butterflies...anicia is very common there). This example is aberrant lacking much of the checkered colorand pattern...this one would probably also qualify as being very melanic. Actually a rare individual and observation. You probably could not tell anything from the underside of this one as well. We collect and keep these types of oddities...no two are alike. Mike
