Great Purple Hairstreak
Atlides halesus

Observation date: March 28, 2024
Submitted by: jamesvonloh
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Individual hairstreak perching on creosotebush shrubs while avoiding gusting wind; while perching it took nutrients from newly emerging leaves (or possibly new floral bracts) and it slowly turned 360-degree circles to expose/warm both wings to the sun. This site is a hilltop within the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park, north of Las Cruces, NM. The afternoon was sunny, warm, and with gusting wind; there were also 2 Gray Hairstreaks and 2 Pima Desert Orangetips on the hilltop.
