Observation notes: I spotted this caterpillar on a sandy beach area along a pond. It was a sunny and pleasant late September afternoon with a temperature in the mid-60s. The sandy shoreline is on land owned by New York State and it doesn't see very much foot traffic. The caterpillar was moving along at a fairly brisk rate over the warm sand. There were no plants within 30 or 40 feet of the the beach area where the caterpillar was spotted. The nearest vegetation is predominantly forested with a mix of White Pine, Red Pine and various hardwoods. There is a moderate amount of understory vegetation in the woods.
