Coordinator notes: My mistake on the original identification...it was called to my attention recently that this is a Green Comma in very bad condition. The county record is retracted...but Nymphalis californica is likely in the same area in late June to August or earlier in the year as a spring appearing hibernator. This record was also flagged on iNat and forwarded to me by that reviewer. Postnote by MSF on 11/25/2025.
Your suggested ID is correct and despite very poor condition (often usual with this butterfly) this appears to be a new COUNTY RECORD for Eagle County. We have very few records for the California Tortoiseshell in western Colorado but your records helps to promote the idea that it is more widespread than has been known, just found in more remote spots that are at best only infrequently accessed. Very good! If you have GPS coords, please send to me at butterfliesofcolorado@hotmail.com Mike
