Hackberry Emperor
Asterocampa celtis

Observation date: August 13, 2023
Date notes: beautiful day
Submitted by: Allison Barta
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Sunny outside, about 75 degrees. Entering my Brother's driveway, I stopped the car to check out a group of butterflies hanging out on the gravel. There was a Common Buckeye, Viceroy, Question Mark Comma, and a Gray Comma along with the Hackberry Emperor. All of them hanging out together flying up now and then. I've never seen a Hackberry Emperor in the North woods. Although this area is called the "Driftless Zone" and I have been finding rare species here past couple of years. I was surprised and happy to get some awesome photos.. It was very shy,
