Painted Lady
Vanessa cardui

Observation date: August 17, 2023
Submitted by: Izetta and Amanda
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: My daughter found a caterpillar on one of our potted sunflowers and made a terrarium and fed it sunflower leaves and created a place for it to cocoon. 2 weeks or so later we enjoyed watching this beautiful west coast lady emerge and fly beautifully around the backyard and out. We’ve been able to document changes and create a big unit in her nature journal.
Status: Migrant

Coordinator notes: Your butterfly is the common Painted Lady, not the West Coast or Western Painted Lady on which the wingtips of the forewings are truncate or squared in shape (but not very elongated). You can see your butterfly has rounded forewing tips and looks to be a female. Mike
