Phaon Crescent
Phyciodes phaon

Observation date: June 19, 2023
Submitted by: DeepSkyKelly
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I know I'm going out on a limb with this one, especially because I only have a partial photograph. Here are my reasons for suggesting Phaon. The light-colored median band is more continuous than I see in Field Crescents and there isn't an additional pale band in the cell. The orange spots behind (toward the wing edge) of the median band are wide. There is a prominent black spot inside orange submarginal spot near bottom tip of forewing. Though I can't see its entire body, this doesn't look as dark basally as the Field. Glassberg says Paons might become established northward, and the range map does include this area as "stray."
Status: Temporary Colonist

Coordinator notes: I agree with your diagnosis. I think it has been seen at Sugarite in the past 2 years. so yes, it may be in the process of becoming established there as a breeding resident. neat!!
