European Yellow Underwing
Noctua pronuba

Observation date: June 04, 2023
Submitted by: Kate Houston
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I found the moth hidden under some Echinacea leaves when I was weeding a flowerbed. I noticed that it had an orange underwing with a single black band, so took two pictures: one with wings closed and one with underwing partly exposed. It was a cool morning, but not dewey as I recall. I've hand-raised Copper Underwings before (and have two cocoons right now, formed on 6/7/23 and 6/8/23), so am somewhat familiar with underwings. I usually add text to particular photos and have done so with these, which are the ones I'm submitting. If you need uncropped pics w/o text, please let me know.

Coordinator notes: Thanks for posting on BAMONA. Your property sounds wonderful as a haven for all kinds of insects, plants, etc. Years ago I lived in that area of the state as a teacher so it was always a nice weekend trip to visit places in Door County. The moth population up in that area was wonderful. I base that comment on the work that Janet Stiefel from Baileys Harbor (Hidden Corners Sanctuary) did on raising and identifying moths. There are over 600 photographs her moths on BugGuide with a fair number of them including photographs of the caterpillars if she reared them. If you are interested you might take a look at iNaturalist if you have reared moths from caterpillars. There are not that many postings from your area of moths on iNaturalist. I posted on BugGuide for many years and last year I posted many of my photos on iNaturalist. Aiming to reach 1000 moth species -- only 8 to go.
