Coordinator notes: The strongly highlighted dark ventral veins are classic for the spring form of P. oleracea. P. virginiensis would have a more lighter, less defined gray highlight to some of the central veins on the ventral HW. You can search a few examples of each online to see the difference. The summer form of P. oleracea loses these dark veins, and becomes much lighter in the ventral side to almost pure white at times. P. virginiensis doesn’t fly past mid June having only one flight per year, so any lightly marked individual after that time is easier to ID as P. oleracea (if it isn’t P. rapae, that is). -jmgesell
