Observation notes: 65F...First day of 60 degrees or more (3 days ago it was 19F with a fresh inch of snow). Saw 5 total in two hours. Four were flying close to ground and landing; one was flying high around a poplar tree. About the size of a Pearl Crescent-- pretty small with conspicuous bright orange band. Flight was very erratic; sometimes slow and low like a crescent, other times fast and skipper-like. Habitat was swampy/spring-fed, brushy, and semi-shaded adjacent to blueberry swamps. Predominately scattered highbush blueberry, poplar, white pine, alders (this is supreme American Woodcock habitat).
