Observation notes: I saw this large moth on the balcony of our apartment building in Colorado Springs, Colorado, several years ago. It was in a corner of the wall near the ceiling; it is resting on a 2x4 and the wood panel was about 8 inches wide. The flash on my camera caused the iridescence in its wings to shine. It's been several years since I took the picture, but I think it rested for only a few minutes before flying away again. I'm fairly certain of the black witch identification because of the comma-shaped spots on the upper wings.
