Coordinator notes: This was submitted as a moth but the size and patterns clearly make it one of the owl-butterflies. I chose Caligo illioneus or Dusky Owl-butterfly because of the small pale streak between the two eyes, the inwardly lobed band, and the colors, plus being one of the common owl-butterflies in Costa Rica, found only here and in Panama. The eyes and patterns make it similar to the Caligo uranus, Yellow-bordered Owl-butterfly, but it does not have the required yellow border. So I'm pretty confident of this ID.
