Volupial Pyrausta Moth
Pyrausta volupialis

Observation date: August 16, 2022
Submitted by: CC Chickadee
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This moth emerged from inside of a curled up Salvia leaf (Salvia microphylla) where it had been pupating for the past 10 days. My young daughter discovered the tiny, well-camouflaged caterpillar feeding on our Salvia plant a couple of weeks ago. We didn’t know what type of caterpillar it was, so we clipped the Salvia branch where the caterpillar was feeding and placed it in a jar and observed the caterpillar. Now that the moth has emerged, we would like to know what it is.
