Queen Alexandra's Sulphur
Colias alexandra

Observation date: July 21, 2022
Submitted by: Paul Prappas
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Lots of butterflies; branded skippers, banded hairstreaks, blue coppers, wood-nymphs, blues and sulphurs. This worn individual was one of many sulphurs flying in the area. Greenish hue to ventral side, particularly the HW, with yellowish center on FW. HW spot is quite pale, which is often the case with QA. Wing shape also seems good.

Coordinator notes: Your deduction is correct...Queen Alexandra's Sulphur...ssp. julia if Hammond and McCorkle's treatise is accepted. Probably best a marginal subspecies as well as two others they defined within the state so Colorado would have 4 subspecies. Mike
