'Astyanax' Red-spotted Purple
Limenitis arthemis astyanax

Observation date: July 20, 2022
Submitted by: backyard-butterflies
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Deer have eaten most of the valuable plants in my back yard and snip any flowers as soon as they bloom, the only butterflies I see this year are cabbage whites and the occasional azure or tiger swallowtail. This red-spotted purple, which I've never seen in my yard before, sailed in this afternoon and rested on several leaves. I discovered that black cherry is a host plant, and there is a small tree in the overgrown space between my yard and my neighbor's, which is where it landed and stayed.
