Two-tailed Swallowtail
Papilio multicaudata

Observation date: July 14, 2022
Submitted by: jamesvonloh
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Individual deposited eggs on the underside of hoptree leaves along the La Cueva Trail at the footslope of the La Cueva Formation in the Organ Mountains. This swallowtail visited the small hoptree at least three times to deposit eggs (bright green masses laid in the center of a leaflet, I have a very fuzzy image), then would fly among large western hackberry trees. The morning was warm, humid, with light wind gusts and under a sunny sky.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: great photos, Jim! You might want to go back to that hoptree plant in a couple weeks and check on the larvae, which will look like bird droppings.
