Coordinator notes: This is the high altitude subspecies of the Anicia Checkerspot (Euphydryas anicia brucei...Bruce's Checkerspot). In Colorado, we have several subspecies at lower altitudes in various parts of the state that fly from late April-May into August. You must be familiar with "Quino" and yes, it is a related species in the same genus...Euphydryas editha quino (formerly ssp. wrightii)...an EPA list protected butterfly found in San Diego County, California...a very nice checkerspot.
