Gulf Fritillary
Agraulis vanillae

Observation date: July 05, 2022

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Surprise visitor to the Coastal Virgnia Wildlife Observatory pollinator garden at James City Marina. 85º (heat index over 90) and bright sunshine. The gorgeous female explored the garden a bit and discovered the plentiful Purple Passionflower vines growing. She began to lay eggs. I stayed a faraway as possible, though had to get photos, as this was my first sighting. She continued her work in the garden about 10 minutes and she left. She has not returned. Last documented sighting (by CVWO) was Oct 2019. And before the 2011 & 2012 both late summer early fall.
