Mexican Metalmark
Apodemia mejicanus

Observation date: June 29, 2022
Submitted by: twofried
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Glassberg does not list Mexican Metalmark, only Mormon, but Scott treats them as separate species. Were they split/lumped recently? Seems to be a high elevation in the Valle Vidal for this species. Do the gray eyes cinch the ID for Mexican Metalmark?
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: nice work, Bob. This group of Apodemia metalmarks is frequently run through the taxonomic ringer, so field guides become out of date soon after publication. You might what Mike and I have to say about them in Butterflies of New Mexico. When the DNA is finally run on this group, this will probably get another name, but we're calling Mexican for the time being.
