Eastern Comma
Polygonia comma

Observation date: June 21, 2022

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I've been watching our milkweeds for evidence of Monarch butterflies (none yet). Today, a flash of orange caught my eye, apparently nectaring on a common milkweed. Not a Monarch; I've since come to believe it is an Eastern Comma. It fluttered among several of our various milkweed plants' umbels. At one point it appeared to rest on a nearly raspberry leaf with its wings wide open, as can be seen in the middle section of the included photograph. It then resumed landing on more of the milkweed umbels. At the time (1:05PM) we had fair skies with an air temperature of about 70°F, dew point 63°F, relative humidity 65%, slowly falling air pressure at 28.75 inches, and a 6 mph breeze from the southwest.
