Field Crescent
Phyciodes pulchella

Observation date: May 23, 2022
Submitted by: DeepSkyKelly
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I guess this is probably a Field Crescent, but I'm a little thrown by the lack of yellow chevrons on the submarginal hindwing (if I'm using the correct terminology). In general there's a good bit of variation between this and the drawing in Kaufman. I keep looking back on the Phaon you saw last year and searching for similarities.

Coordinator notes: Phaon last year was probably a freak occurrence, though I suppose time will tell. Might as well start with the most logical/probable option and try to disprove it. To distinguish Phaon and Field, look at the dorsal FW: Field has a dark base while Phaon has an orange base; beyond the creamy post-median band, Phaon has a bold reddish band while Field has a wavy and less bold orange band.
