Desert Orangetip
Anthocharis cethura

Observation date: March 17, 2022
Submitted by: jamesvonloh
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Several orangetips were perching and sunning on creosotebush shrubs while defending territory from each other and desert marbles. A pair of them conducted courtship and mating while being "attended" by 1-to-5 other individuals. Image #6 shows them separated after ~20 minutes of being paired. This site is on the crown of Observation Hill within the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park, east-facing slope of the Dona Ana Mountains, along Jornada Road. The afternoon was under full sun, cool, and with wind gusts whipping the hilltop.

Coordinator notes: Jim, these are tremendous photos. Male and female look almost the same, but your final image shows the minor difference, I will be borrowing a couple :^) thank you!
