Western Pygmy-Blue
Brephidium exilis

Observation date: December 11, 2021
Submitted by: jamesvonloh
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Individual(s?) taking nectar from water speedwell flowers on plants growing adjacent to the treated wastewater flow at its release into the Rio Grande. The individual also sunned on the sand; it has a prominent white spot on its dorsal hindwing margin, an attribute new to me but evidently regularly observed in a population. The day was bright, breezy, and under full sun.

Coordinator notes: Jim, those are spectacular photos. Thanks for remarking on the white/pale spots in the HW submargin. They occur on 1 or 2 of my own photos, but I never paid them much attention. this is a widespread species and some variation can be expected over its trans-continental range, but I'll keep my eyes and ears open in case some useful info comes along.
