Observation notes: Before the rains came this summer to southern New Mexico, butterflies were swarming on catclaw acacia - one of the few flowering plants. This one was in the arroyo near the Soledad Canyon trailhead. Of note, no butterflies (or other insects for that matter) were drawn to the whitethorn acacia which was rife with yellow flowers in the same locale at the same time.
