American Snout
Libytheana carinenta

Observation date: December 23, 2021
Submitted by: jamesvonloh
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: A small flight of snouts arrived along the Rio Grande prior to Christmas. They used tall shrubs of coyote willow and tamarisk to perch, for cover, moist sand to take nutrients, and nectared on water speedwell flowers on the riverbanks. This river reach has perennial flow due to wastewater discharged up-channel. Site conditions were sunny, cool, and with gusty wind.
Status: Temporary Colonist
