Observation notes: During the spring drought of 2021, many migrating butterflies used spiny chloracantha flowers as an important nectaring source. Variegated fritillaries were common among these early-arriving species along the Rio Grande (as were checkered whites, dainty sulphurs, and white checkered skippers). A few variegated fritillaries also nectared from tamarisk, baccharis, white evening-primrose, and phacelia flowers that were sparsely available near the riverbank. Morning Observation conditions included warm temperature, breezy to windy conditions, and full sun.
