Spotted Tussock Moth or Yellow-Spotted Tiger Moth
Lophocampa maculata

Observation date: September 04, 2021
Submitted by: Mary Lou Coombs
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I found caterpillar on my decking this morning. Our area, Dunville Newfoundland Labrador, had a lot of rain overnight as what was left of Hurricane Ida passed over us heading out to the Atlantic Ocean. It was very still sitting on a top railing of my deck. It is quite humid outside with my thermometer reading at 24 degrees Celsius. It sat there for hours. Then suddenly disappeared. I do have two birch trees in my garden, however this caterpillar was about 30 feet from them. What is more peculiar is that around the same time last year I had one on my flooring area of my deck. Only one caterpillar, exact same type, around the same date, in the same area two years in a row.
