Observation notes: Fed on wet soil near clethra alnifolia and ninebark cultivar (Little Devil), drank nectar from summer phlox and hummingbird mint. We have two wild cherry trees in the backyard (Prunus avium). Temp is upper 80s F and clear weather conditions. Thunderstorms predicted tonight. Very large size (4-5 inches across, I'd estimate).

Coordinator notes: You might be right about this being P. appalachiensis, and I would really like it to be, too. But without seeing the underside I can't see the field marks that would allow me to distinguish this from P. glaucus. P. appalachiensis is typically larger than P. glaucus, and your notes indicate that this sp. was large, but without some scale I just can't be sure about this. Apologies. JRains
