Butterflies and Moths of North America

collecting and sharing data about Lepidoptera

  Sighting 1306251

Observation date: July 20, 2021
Submitted by: MartyGiffen
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: In previous years these plants were swarming with two kinds of gnophaela. There were few this year. I previously sent in a photo of two that I think were latipenni, but this one I am sure is vermiculata (four side-by-side white spots on the bottom of the wings).
Status: Unknown

Coordinator notes: jwileyrainsnoted that this specimen is likely G. latipennis, rather than G. vermiculata. He is correct, the specimens closely matches the photo on pl. 48.4, in Powell & Opler, 2009, Moths of western North America; and also the photo at moth photographers group, https://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/species.php?hodges=8034.
