Phaon Crescent
Phyciodes phaon

Observation date: August 07, 2021
Submitted by: Chrustay
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Tried very hard to get better photographs but it was a bit windy and these critters weren't putting up with much movement of any kind. There was frogfruit (perhaps several species?) everywhere - seeming to carpet the dry portion of the lake bed that we were walking in some places. (I can send photos of the frogfruits if needed.) There were *at least* two Phaon Crescents here and we didn't cover a lot of the appropriate area with frogfruits. First day that I've seen *hundreds* of butterflies this year - granted it was only about 11 species but certainly fun to see 250+ A. nicippe, etc. I've added in as many decent photos as I got, but failed to get anything much of the upper surface. I can't find anything that shows P. phaon having been found in Guadalupe County before, but if the habitat with the low lake levels has been the same for several years, I can't imagine that no one has found them previously.

Coordinator notes: Christopher, he pix are good enough. the frogfruit shows they are breeding. possibly the lower lake levels has opened up habitat that was not present earlier, but for whatever reason this does seem to be new for Guadalupe County YAY!
