Northwestern Fritillary
Speyeria hesperis

Observation date: July 06, 2021
Submitted by: Harry Forbes
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Butterfly nectaring on what appear to be thistles. Sunny and hot. Frits are difficult for me for various reasons....primarily their variability from location to location and within each species. The overall dark wing bases with the heavy spotting and blackish veining on the forewing combined with overall look underneath plus my location in southern UT (Iron Co) suggest this species to me. Would appreciate your take. Elevation7170 feet.

Coordinator notes: There is not as much diversity of Speyeria spp. (now Argynnis) in Iron County. Speyeria hesperis chitone is very common in this county. https://www.butterfliesofamerica.com/speyeria_hesperis_chitone.htm
