Northwestern Fritillary
Speyeria hesperis

Observation date: July 06, 2021
Submitted by: Cascade Colors
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Pretty sure there was more than one species of fritillary in this area at this time. Last year in same area I saw the northwestern a little under two weeks prior, and this looks similar but many look nearly identical to me so I don't know.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Yes, I agree with your suggestion this is the Northwestern Fritillary; look like the spots on the underside are only lightly silvered and on this particular individual, rather large for this species. You can tell the NW Frit from Aphrodite by eye color. As you can see in your photos, this one has gray-blue eyes. Aphrodite has distinctly brown eyes (but this species would be very uncommon or rare in Summit County). Mike
