Evergreen Bagworm Moth
Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis

Observation date: August 10, 2020
Date notes: This was found the evening after a derecho went through the Midwest.

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This was found on the side of my office building in downtown Des Moines, Iowa in a historic neighborhood called the East Village. There are a few trees in the area, but mostly it is an area characterized by pavement. The sighting followed a derecho storm that travelled through the Midwest and hit Iowa with winds up to 120 mph. Most of our city and others around the state lost electricity due to downed trees and lines. This caterpillar, seemed out of place climbing a brick wall but may have blown in from an area tree. I have two photos as well as a video of it climbing the wall.
