Variegated Fritillary
Euptoieta claudia

Observation date: August 05, 2020
Submitted by: EddieGarrity
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I have a Passion Vine (Passiflora incarnata) plant in the backyard. Every year it spreads underground. Sprouts come up in many places including in a small area which is still lawn. From the lawn I pull out the sprouts weekly, although these sprouts may be two weeks old. Two sprouts each had a small Variegated fritillary caterpillar feeding on it. This caterpillar was 15 mm long, not including the antennae. I placed the two removed sprouts, each with a caterpillar, amongst passion vine growth outside of the lawn.
