Central Dotted-Blue
Euphilotes centralis

Observation date: July 27, 2020
Submitted by: DeepSkyKelly
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I’m leaning toward a variety of Square-Spotted Blue. Looking at small orange patches on inside lower wing. Also, thinner spots on underside of lower wing. I am unable to make a definitive ID.

Coordinator notes: good work on the diagnosis. Buckwheat Blues are tough, but I think you only have one (maybe two) species in your area. In addition to the characters you mention, the wide black dorsal wing margin is typical for Centralis. If you find Eriogonum jamesii var. jamesii nearby, that will clinch the ID.
