Northwestern Fritillary
Speyeria hesperis

Observation date: July 07, 2020
Submitted by: LightScavenger
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I was surprised to see so many fritillaries on a single coneflower -- they didn't seem to be competing for nectar at all.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: your photo is a great shot, showing several individuals. they may not all be the same species, but at least one of them is not Great Spangled - the one showing part of the hindwing underside. I can't see eyes very well and they are helpful to distinguish Great Spangled (amber) from Northwestern (blue/gray); the eyes I can see seem to lean toward blue gray. So I'm going with Northwestern.
