Pearl Crescent
Phyciodes tharos

Observation date: July 13, 2020
Submitted by: HansPG
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This is an individual butterfly, but there were at least one of these every few feet over a mile and a half of a trail and sometimes clusters of up to dozens, so thousands total. They were ‘sunning’ themselves and sometimes mating. Later in the afternoon they disappeared into the tall grass, mostly. I would lean toward the Phyciodes tharos ID, but it seems different from the Phyciodes tharos in 1259220. This is much smaller, only around 1 1/4 inches across, while the other in 1259220 is around 2 inches wingspan.
